1. Harriman State Park

Covering an area of almost 48,000 acres, Harriman State Park is one of the largest nature reserves in the entire state of New York, as well as one of the most popular weekend destinations among visitors from other towns and cities in the area. Located about 100 miles northwest of the Riverhead city center, this state park can be reached in about two hours by car via route I-495 and Palisades Interstate Parkway.

Established in the early 20th century and welcoming over 1,400,000 visitors each year, Harriman State Park is known for its beautiful scenery and diverse wildlife. Some of the species of birds and mammals you can find in this sprawling nature reserve include white-tailed deer, beavers, river otters, woodpeckers, flycatchers, and peregrine falcons. Besides wildlife watching, this state park is a great spot for hiking, biking, picnicking, and camping.

2. Wildwood State Park

Offering a scenic background for swimming, fishing, camping, and other recreational activities, Wildwood State Park is a beautiful nature reserve located along the northern shores of Long Island and about 10 miles northwest of downtown Riverhead. With pristine beaches, large swathes of undeveloped hardwood forests, and several miles of hiking and biking trails, this place is a great destination for a weekend away from the city.

Wildwood State Park was established in 1925 and covers an area of a little under 770 acres. Besides being a popular recreational destination among visitors from all over the state of New York, this place is also home to several different animal species that make it a true paradise for wildlife watchers and photographers.

3. Cold Spring Harbor State Park

A hilly 40-acre park offering fantastic harbor views, large areas of hardwood forests, and plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreational activities, Cold Spring Harbor State Park is a fantastic spot for a day trip or a weekend escape. Located just 50 miles west of Riverhead, this nature reserve can be reached in less than one hour by car via route I-495.
